POSTERS ENGULF SIGNBOARDS

As the festive season has knocked the door, political groups, locals leaders and other organisations have made their presence felt on the sign boards all over Vaishali, Indirapuram, Vasundhara and other parts of the city.

It may not be a surprise that you are stuck in a massive traffic jam, searching a sign board to reach your desired destination and you encounter a giant board of a leader wishing you ‘Happy Navratre’, covering the useful sign board. This is a common scenario in the city where many of the sign boards have become inaccessible to commuters because of posters by different groups trying to highlight themselves during the festive season.  The sign boards of the city are covered with messages wishing commuters a variety of festivals ranging from Independence Day, Janmashtami, Rakhi to Eid, Navratre, Shivratri, Ramleela etc.
“This is irritating sometimes. My friend was on his way with his family to visit us in Vaishali a few days back. He had come to this area for the first time and was stuck in traffic on the main road. He had to take a left turn from Shopprix mall but he missed it because he could not spot any sign board to direct him. When he called me, I got to know that he had moved away from our house and he took a u-turn to come back. He would not have wasted his 20 minutes if the sign board was visible enough,” informs Sumit Grover, a resident of Vaishali.
Commuters allege that it has led to slow down in traffic movement and his defacement of public property.
“When people realise that they have missed the sign board, they either start moving in the backward direction or taking a U-turn in the middle of the road which disrupts the entire traffic,” says Gaurav Chanda, a commuter.
Many organisations have complained about the issue to the authority but nothing has been done in this regard.
“We have drafted a letter to the authority highlighting the trouble these encroachments on sign boards are causing. We are hoping that they will take an action soon,” says Alok Kumar, president of FedAOA.
In this regard, Ashok Singh, zonal officer in GNN says “Such practices have tremendously hiked this year and we have received complaints as well from residents. We plan to fine the political parties and private organisations who are defying the laws and causing inconvenience to locals.”

ILLEGAL BUS STOPS, A PAIN

Disrupting the smooth flow of traffic in the city, drivers of private buses and those of the transport department are making unscheduled halts whenever and wherever they please.
DTC and private bus operators blatantly flout Indian Road Congress (IRC) rules and cause traffic chaos on every road of the city. They illegally stop at many places to pick up passengers from there. They have also made some illegal stands. One of them is in Sector 62 beside National Highway 24 and nearby sub-police station of Sector 58. Besides, DTC buses are also parked here for a long time.
According to IRC, bus stops should be 100 meters away from the traffic signals to avoid chaos. But, the place is hardly 50 meters away from the red light.
The problem has aggravated over the years as the awareness drives launched by the police to educate the public against flagging down buses at unscheduled spots has failed. While it is the duty of the police to regulate traffic, the general public too should cooperate and board buses from the bus stand and the authorised places.
A commuter, Gopal Kumar said, “I am availing the bus service for a long time. I am bound to use this stop as I have to commute daily. I have no other option. If I do not use this bus shelter, I have to travel long distance to board the bus. Besides, I won’t even get a seat. If the authority wants us to stop this practice, they should take the onus of constructing a legal bus shelter here.”
Despite the lack of passengers’ amenities, many commuters wait for buses here on a daily basis. There are many other places like Mamura, BMO etc where there are illegal stops. These illegal stoppages are giving a tough time to school children, bikers, senior citizens and residents of respective sectors.
SM Singh, RWA president, Sector 62 said, “The buses stop where ever they please giving rise to traffic jams on many occasions. As a result these buses cause unnecessary blockage and citizens get stuck in traffic jams. It may pose serious threat to children and senior citizens.”
Meanwhile, Sandeep Chandra, senior project engineer said, “The Noida Development Authority has 75 bus stops in total where there is provision of basic amenities for passengers. We have asked the department of roadways to submit detail report of various routes where more bus shelters can be constructed.”
When Cityplus contacted Dharmendar Singh, Traffic Inspector of Noida Authority, he said, “We will look into the mater later as formula race one championship event is going on.”

I am availing the bus service for a long time. I am bound to use this stop as I have to commute daily. I have no other option.
